Choices

The single lane you’re driving along starts to widen.  It’s likely it will split into two lanes.

How to decide which to get into?  Go slowly enough to :
  • Read well ahead  (spot clues: traffic-flows, tree-lines, ...)
  • Signs  (think “SCIW”)
  • Markings  (lines guide you forward; arrows direct you)
  • Lights  (traffic control, or brakes?)
  • Pair-up  (a lane with a sign, or with a road)
  • Going over a lane arrow?  (too late: stay in your lane)
If you find you’re in the wrong lane, you can always continue, on a different route, to the same destination.  Avoid sudden changes.  Look at the pictures here and follow how short lines guide you into the lane marked with long lines.

Satnavs will reroute you within seconds.  A side road will often appear so you can turn around, if necessary.
