Examiners

These people come in all shapes and sizes. Of course they do: they’re human individuals, just like you and me. But they’re highly trained, and continually monitored, to ensure they assess you fairly. (My own experience, sitting in on dozens of practical tests, is that they do that reasonably and consistently).
HOWEVER, you will feel differently when you meet them. That split second after they call you name in the waiting room, when you first set eyes on them, you’ll have an involuntary emotional reaction. We all do. |
Initially, you’ll be distracted by them asking you to sign a form. But after that, when walking to the car, TAKE THE CHANCE to make a little conversation, to build rapport in those 1-2 minutes before you sit down and things start to feel formal.
And, during the test, chat more: impersonal, lighthearted stuff. Take the lead: it’s YOUR test. You’re just hiring them for their professional assessment on behalf of HM Government. Believe you’re in charge. Because you ARE. All the controls are in front of YOU. You get to decide what happens, ultimately where you go and how you proceed.
Lastly, try to ignore what they do with their hands. Not every use of pen or stylus is because you’ve made a fault. They have to record other stuff, too. It’s not YOUR job to interpret what they do, that’s theirs. Your job is to concentrate and PERFORM.
